Inclusive Play: Shuttle Time Brings Badminton to Every Student in Hato Mayor

October 5, 2025

Physical education teachers were identified as a key resource in the development of badminton in the Dominican Republic, and a Shuttle Time course was conducted to equip them with the skills to impart knowledge to their students.

The course, held on 29 August 2025, was started in the eastern region of the country, in the province of Hato Mayor. The project sought to bring basic knowledge of badminton to PE teachers through the Ministry of Education so that teachers could implement badminton practice in their programmes.

The course was implemented with two teaching sessions: a theoretical part at the beginning of the programme, while the rest was practical. Various activities from the Shuttle Time manual, adapted to the curricular programme of the Ministry of Education of the Dominican Republic, were conducted.

Luis Gil, a teacher at the Doña Renee Klang de Guzmán school, was one example of a teacher motivated by children who sought to pick up badminton. Gil enjoys imparting badminton skills to his students, who are thrilled with his classes.

Another example is that of Ángel Rosario, a teacher who, due to his good performance in the implementation of badminton in Liceo Cientifico school, received material support from the association of his province. This was done to encourage the teacher to continue his training for around 15-20 children per section in his PE classes.

Badminton is seen as a sport that can be practiced by students of different physical levels and abilities, making it an inclusive activity that encourages everyone’s participation. Badminton also promotes values such as respect, cooperation, teamwork and healthy competition, and allows interaction between students in a non-academic environment.
