BWF Builds on Malaysia Legacy Project

December 16, 2024

As part of the BWF Malaysia Legacy Project, BWF delivered three coaching clinics in April and July to celebrate International Day of Sport and Development for Peace (#Whitecard Day) and besides World Badminton Day.

In continuation of the project, BWF conducted a BWF Shuttle Time Teachers Course at Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management & Technology (TARUMT) in Kuala Lumpur on 9 November 2024. The course, facilitated by Shuttle Time Tutor Erica Khoo, saw enthusiastic participation from 15 individuals, including volunteer students of TARUMT and staff of IGB commercial REIT (IGBCR). The goal is to develop IGBCR capacity and work force in order for them to deliver more badminton activities in 2025.

Coaching Clinics

During the period from September till December 2024, a series of coaching clinics were held with the support of Haier. Two mini coaching clinics were held, one with 20 elderly participants from Pertubuhan Kebajikan Warga Emas Sungai Chua on 7 September and another with 20 refugee children from Living Water Learning Centre on 23 November.

Sia Bobo, Project Manager of Malaysian Social Entrepreneurs Foundation (MSEF), who coordinated the activity with Pertubuhan Kebajikan Warga Emas Sungai Chua, said: “This is the first time MSEF coordinated a badminton activity with BWF-Haier for the elderly. We witnessed Shuttle Time activity easily adapted and catered for the elderly – like balloon tap and target games – which are low impact and can be enjoyed by them while standing or sitting. Some of them reminisced their memory of playing badminton when they were young.”

‘Happy and Upbeat’

Angelina Tay, Teacher from LWLC who participated the activity on 23 November, said: “Thank you BWF and Haier for the opportunity. The kids were in such a happy and upbeat mode after the session. The kids are just so happy to get this chance to get a proper clinic. It was a good, good day and an excellent session.”

A series of home visits was conducted with four homes and two of BWF’s partners (Haier and IGBCR), where volunteers deliver badminton sessions progressively to underprivileged children. These homes are Buku Jalanan Chow Kit, Praise Emmanuel Children’s Home, Rumah Kasih Harmoni Paya Jaras and Mega Orang Asli Children’s Home. A total of 10 visits, 40+ volunteers and 87 underprivileged children engaged in the sessions.

Enthusiasm for Project

Zulkhairi, from Rumah Kasih Harmoni Paya Jaras, said: “I had fun and happy session, I felt that I learnt a lot during the session and I’m getting better at badminton!”

Robert, Supervisor at Mega Orang Asli Children’s Home, said: “The programme makes the kids more interested in badminton. Previously the kids never wanted to join any other badminton activities outside but recently they’ve been wanting to participate.”

Arisya, from Buku Jalanan Chow Kit, said:I never thought badminton could be this great! The Shuttle Time coaches taught me to keep trying even when it’s tough.”

Isaac, Supervisor at Praise Emmanuel Children’s Home: “This initiative by BWF is a great opportunity for our children to be active and healthy through sport. Our children are always excited when they hear about badminton!”

Equipment Donation

In addition to the above, badminton equipment was donated to IDEAS Academy and International School of Kuala Lumpur to support their CSR badminton initiatives with underprivileged children through their school programme.

BWF look forward to continuing the legacy project in 2025 and beyond with local partners who share the same enthusiasm!
