Inclusive Event in Barbados

June 1, 2026

The Barbados Badminton Association participated in an A.B.L.E (Everyone is A.B.L.E.) Inclusive Event, delivering badminton-based activities designed to introduce the sport in a fun, accessible, and inclusive way.

Of the 100 participants, 40 were those with various kinds of challenges such as autism, ADHD, Down’s Syndrome, hearing impairment and other intellectual and physical disabilities. The event was organised at the Kensington Oval, Barbados, on 28 March 2026.

The participants were aged between 4 and 18, with 50 per cent being female.

Inclusion Through Sport

The activity focused on using badminton as a tool to promote interaction, participation, and social development among children of varying abilities. The initiative was inspired by the aim to promote inclusion through sport, encourage interaction between children of different abilities, and demonstrate how badminton can be adapted to support participation for all.

Badminton activities were delivered using adapted Shuttle Time principles, and included training on shuttle balance, grip introduction, serving, overhead throwing, and modified gameplay. Participants were paired to encourage interaction and teamwork.

Positive Response

The activities were well received, with high levels of engagement, enjoyment, and cooperation observed. Participants demonstrated increased confidence, improved coordination, and positive social interaction.

The event highlighted the effectiveness of Shuttle Time in creating inclusive sporting environments and promoting equal participation.

Tremayne Griffith, Shuttle Time Coordinator, highlighted the effectiveness of Shuttle Time in encouraging inclusion: “Shuttle Time continues to demonstrate its value as an inclusive and adaptable programme that allows children of all abilities to participate, interact, and enjoy badminton in a supportive environment.”
