Building Badminton’s Future in Nigeria: Benue State’s Successful Shuttle Time Program

December 1, 2024

A three-day Shuttle Time Teachers’ Court that was conducted in Benue State, Nigeria, led to several positive outcomes among children and teachers.

The course, conducted 25 to 27 April 2024, involved the training of teachers/games masters and four pupils by BWF certified Tutors. The schools were given rackets, nets and shuttlecocks for use at the schools once the course was completed.

The aim was to ensure quality delivery of coaching at the grassroots, and to eventually take badminton throughout Nigeria and make it as popular as possible.

After delivery of the daily course, the participants were made to teach the pupils what they had learnt and the organisers used this to assess and correct them when necessary.

The initiative from BWF and BCA has helped make badminton more popular at the local government levels. Most of the Shuttle Time activities were attended by the State Commissioner for Sports, the Director of Sports, head coaches and other stakeholders, who provided valuable suggestions.

Commissioner for Sports: This programme is what we were waiting for a long time because it’s adapted to our children. Our kids can learn to play and enjoy badminton. Thank you to BFN and BWF.

Director of Sports: I’m happy to receive this activity in my region. It’s an activity which we can propose to kids in addition to other games. Shuttle Time makes the game attractive and we will continue to promote the game in our region.
